The maker behind every lanyard
Meet Sylvia Thokozile Rasmeni
Born 1968, Eastern Cape · Now Cape Town

Sylvia Thokozile Rasmeni
Beadwork artisan · Cape Town
A difficult start
Sylvia grew up in the Eastern Cape without her father, raised by her aunt. At just 15 she was sold into marriage to an older man—a decision that was never hers to make. She fell pregnant at 17 and had her second child at 20. The marriage was marked by relentless abuse.
“He'd come home drunk and beat me for no reason. I left with my two kids because I'd had enough—but my aunt didn't want me back.”
Starting over in Cape Town
She moved to Cape Town, found work as a domestic worker, and enrolled in night school. She had dropped out in Grade 6 back home—now she was determined to finish. She reached Grade 10 before her children needed her full-time again.
“It was tough leaving my kids in the morning and returning at night. But I kept pushing, trying to make a success for myself.”
Facing the hardest news
In 1999 she fell pregnant again. When she found out she was HIV-positive—and so was her unborn baby—her partner disappeared. She delivered prematurely and raised that child alone, as she had the others.
“Life got tougher, but I pushed on—as mother and father to my children.”
“For over 21 years I've been doing beadwork, making pieces to order. My life is a testament to resilience—I could write a whole book about it. Despite everything, I'm still here, creating beauty with beads.”
When you buy one of these lanyards you are not just equipping yourself for a shift. You are putting money directly into Sylvia's hands—supporting a craft she has kept alive for over two decades, and a household she has held together through extraordinary hardship.
Why this partnership matters
WiZmed supplies the tools that healthcare professionals depend on every day—stethoscopes, scrubs, equipment. Sylvia is a patient in that same healthcare system, receiving care at Groote Schuur Hospital. The doctors, nurses, and students who shop with us are, in a very real sense, the same community that looks after her.

It’s how she puts food on the table, keeps the lights on, and supports her family.
