Patella Hammer - Babinsky Nylon (Adult)
This patella hammer is designed to optimise the elicitation of myotatic reflexes. The instrument features a weighted head and a soft, rubber collar, calibrated to provide precise force application for accurate reflex assessment. The flexible nylon handle tapers gracefully, offering superior grip and control.
- Precision-engineered for reliable myotatic reflex testing.
- Weighted head and soft rubber collar for consistent, precise strikes.
- Ergonomic, tapered nylon handle allows for an optimal grip.
- Suited for specialised elicitation of plantar and abdominal reflexes.
Design rationale & safety (Babinski testing)
The plantar (Babinski) end of this patella hammer is intentionally non-sharp.
The Babinski reflex is elicited through firm cutaneous stimulation, not skin penetration or pain. A sharp edge is not required and may actually interfere with accurate assessment by causing withdrawal or discomfort. For this reason, many clinicians routinely use blunt instruments such as the handle of a reflex hammer or a tongue depressor.
This design choice also improves patient and user safety:
-
The smooth, blunt tip does not break the skin
There is no risk of bleeding or sharps injury
It does not pose a blood-borne infection risk (e.g. HIV or Hepatitis B) when used correctly
Suitable for routine clinical and teaching use with standard surface cleaning between patients
