The short version
Who the WiZmed Stethoscope is for
We started as students who could not always afford the stethoscope we wanted. This is the one we would have bought, and the kit we would have wanted around it.
The range at a glance
Made for a first clinical year
The WiZmed Stethoscope is for the student walking onto a ward for the first time, the nurse or paramedic who needs a dependable scope every shift, and the clinician who wants a second one for the car or the clinic bag. A dual-head chestpiece covers adults and children; light pressure on the diaphragm brings up low-frequency sounds and firm pressure the high ones, so heart sounds, breath sounds and a blood pressure reading all come from one instrument.
What you get for R1,649
A CNC-machined stainless-steel dual-head chestpiece with a non-chill rim, an adjustable-frequency diaphragm, latex-free single-lumen tubing, an anatomically angled lightweight headset and soft-sealing snap-fit eartips. In the box: the stethoscope, a spare diaphragm and spare eartips. It weighs about 150 g and measures about 71 cm, and it comes with a five-year warranty backed from Cape Town. Prof Mpiko Ntsekhe, Head of Cardiology at UCT and Groote Schuur, used one on his patients for a term and recorded what he heard; the video is on the product page.
The WiZmed Combo: six tools, one box
The Combo is the stethoscope plus the five things a first clinical year asks for: an aneroid sphygmomanometer, a tourniquet, a patella hammer, a measuring tape and a pupil torch with gauge. Every item is the same product we sell on its own, so nothing in the box is a lesser version. It costs a little more than the stethoscope alone and a good deal less than buying the six separately, and it ships the same way, engraved on request.
Engraving, delivery and warranty
We laser-engrave a name or title on the chestpiece in-house for R250, usually on the day you order. Orders ship from Cape Town to anywhere in South Africa, and delivery is free on orders over R3,000. The five-year warranty covers manufacturing defects, and replacement tubing and eartips are stocked here so a worn part never means a new stethoscope.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
Is the WiZmed Stethoscope good enough for medical school?
Yes. It is a dual-head stethoscope with a tunable diaphragm and a stainless-steel chestpiece, which is what clinical skills teaching assumes you have. It picks up heart sounds, murmurs and breath sounds clearly enough for OSCEs and ward rounds, and it carries a five-year warranty. The Head of Cardiology at UCT reviewed it on his own patients; the video is on the product page.
What is the cheapest stethoscope worth buying in South Africa?
Anything below a dual-head, tunable-diaphragm design will do a blood pressure reading and little else. The WiZmed Stethoscope, from R1,649, is the lowest-priced stethoscope we are prepared to put our own name on: it has the acoustics and the warranty a student actually needs, and we engrave it on the day you order.
What is in the WiZmed Combo?
Six items: the WiZmed Stethoscope, an aneroid sphygmomanometer, a tourniquet, a patella hammer, a measuring tape and a pupil torch with gauge. Each is the same product we sell separately, and the Combo costs less than buying them one by one.
Does the WiZmed Stethoscope have a warranty?
Yes, five years against manufacturing defects, handled from our Cape Town office. Spare diaphragms, eartips and replacement tubing are also stocked, so a worn part can be replaced rather than the whole instrument.
Can I get the WiZmed Stethoscope engraved?
Yes. We laser-engrave a name or title on the chestpiece in-house for R250, usually the same day, and dispatch straight after.
The WiZmed Stethoscope and the WiZmed Combo: our own dual-head stethoscope, designed in South Africa, with a five-year warranty and same-day engraving. Sold on its own or as a six-piece ward kit.
