Buying guide
Which pen torch is right for nurses and students?
A pen torch is for checking pupil reactions and looking into the throat. The differences come down to the light, the body and extras such as a ruler.
Pupil torch with gauge or a plain penlight?
The WiZmed Pupil Torch has a cool-white light and a 0 to 5 cm millimetre ruler along the barrel, handy for measuring pupils and lesions. It comes in black, red or blue and takes two AAA batteries, sold separately. It is also part of the WiZmed Student Combo with a hammer, tape and tourniquet. The metal casing clips into a scrub or coat pocket, and you switch it on by pressing the clip.
Halogen or LED, metal or aluminium?
The Welch Allyn Halogen Examination Penlite has a solid brass body and a replaceable halogen bulb, and laser engraving is available. ADC makes the Metalite, an aluminium penlight with a locking switch, and the Adlite Pro, an LED penlight rated for 10,000 hours in a brass housing. Both ADC lights include two AAA batteries. The Metalite is 14.6 cm long and the Adlite Pro has a pocket clip. If you prefer a warmer light that shows tissue colour, choose halogen; if you want a light that lasts, LED.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
What batteries does a pen torch take?
All the torches here take two AAA batteries. The WiZmed Pupil Torch is sold without batteries; the ADC Metalite, ADC Adlite Pro and Welch Allyn Penlite include them. AAA batteries are sold in pairs under consumables.
What is the ruler on the pupil torch for?
The millimetre scale on the WiZmed Pupil Torch lets you estimate pupil size and measure small lesions without carrying a separate ruler.
Can I get my name on a pen torch?
Laser engraving is available on the Welch Allyn Halogen Examination Penlite. Ask us about other torches before ordering.
