Buying guide
Which otoscope should I buy?
Our otoscopes run from an entry-level student model to full-size Welch Allyn diagnostic sets. The right one depends on how often you will use it and whether you also need an ophthalmoscope.
How much is an otoscope?
There are three broad tiers. Entry-level is the WiZmed otoscope, a fibre-optic LED model with 3× magnification and ten reusable specula, made for learning ear examination. Mid-range is the Welch Allyn pocket range: the halogen Pocket Junior 22841 and the Pocket Plus LED 22880. Premium is the full-size Welch Allyn diagnostic set, such as the Professional Plus 97250, with a metal C-cell handle and a coaxial ophthalmoscope in a rigid case. Prices are shown on each product.

Which is the best otoscope for doctors?
If you examine ears every day, look for a sealed head with an insufflation port for pneumatic otoscopy, a bright and true-colour light, and a handle that will survive years of use. The Welch Allyn 3.5 V diagnostic sets tick all three. The Pocket Plus LED otoscope is a lighter option with a 6-lumen LED rated to 20,000 hours and 2.5× magnification. Students rarely need that level on day one, but interns doing ENT and paediatric work often do.
Do I need an ophthalmoscope as well?
Most clinical students are taught fundoscopy, so a combined set saves buying twice. The WiZmed otoscope has an optional basic ophthalmoscope head for introductory eye examination. Welch Allyn pocket sets pair an otoscope and an ophthalmoscope with a −20 to +20 dioptre range. The Arclight is a small all-in-one ophthalmoscope, otoscope and loupe that charges by solar or USB-C, and Arclight simulation eyes let you practise fundoscopy on five fundus images.

Otoscope specula sizes
Specula come in sizes measured in millimetres at the tip. Use the largest that fits the ear canal comfortably: smaller sizes for children, larger for adults. The Welch Allyn 24400-U set has one each of 2.5, 3, 4 and 5 mm and fits Welch Allyn Diagnostic and MacroView otoscopes. The WiZmed otoscope comes with five small and five large specula, and Arclight specula are sold in packs of 20.
Batteries and carrying
Pocket otoscopes from WiZmed and Welch Allyn run on two AA batteries, which are not included. Full-size Welch Allyn sets take two C batteries in the handle, and rechargeable handles are sold separately. Pocket sets fit a coat pocket; full-size sets come in a rigid case and usually live in a bag. Keep spare batteries in your bag, as a dim light makes the eardrum hard to assess.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
What is the difference between an otoscope and an ophthalmoscope?
An otoscope lights and magnifies the ear canal and eardrum, using a speculum. An ophthalmoscope is used to look through the pupil at the back of the eye. Diagnostic sets combine both heads on one handle.
What battery does a Welch Allyn otoscope take?
The Pocket Junior 22841, Pocket LED 92871 and Pocket Plus LED 22880 take two AA batteries. The full-size Professional Plus 97250 and Elite 97200 sets use a C-cell handle that takes two C batteries. Batteries are not included.
Which otoscope is good for medical students?
For learning ear examination, the WiZmed otoscope or the Welch Allyn Pocket Junior 22841 are the usual starting points. If you also need an ophthalmoscope and want a set that lasts into internship, look at the Welch Allyn Pocket LED sets.
Can I replace the bulb in my otoscope?
Yes. The Pocket Junior 22841 uses the Welch Allyn 03400 bulb, and the Professional Plus 97250-BI uses the 03100-U for the otoscope and 04900-U for the ophthalmoscope. These are listed under Welch Allyn spares.
What does pneumatic otoscopy need?
A sealed otoscope head with an insufflation port, so a bulb can gently change the pressure in the ear canal. The Welch Allyn Pocket Junior, Pocket LED and full-size diagnostic otoscopes all have a sealed head.
