Buying guide
Which pulse oximeter should you buy?
All our oximeters are fingertip models that show oxygen saturation (SpO₂) and pulse rate. They differ in display, stated accuracy, finger size and how much knocking about they take.
The range at a glance
Entry-level or ADC?
The Contec CMS-50D is the entry-level choice. It shows SpO₂, pulse rate, a waveform and a bar graph, and its display turns in four directions so you can read it from the patient's side or your own. The ADC Advantage 2200 is the mid-range option for spot checks at home, in sport or when flying. It has a bright LED display and states its accuracy: SpO₂ ±2% and pulse ±5 bpm. The ADC Diagnostix 2100 adds a dual-colour OLED display, six display modes and a rubber bumper for a busy clinic.
Do children need a paediatric oximeter?
Yes. Adult fingertip models fit fingers of roughly 8–20 mm, so a small finger lets light leak past the sensor. The ADC Adimals 2150 is made for fingers of 7.6–11.2 mm and has a child-friendly face that helps a child keep still.
Getting a reading you can trust
Wait for a steady waveform or bar graph before you write the number down. Cold hands, movement, nail varnish and acrylic nails all cause poor or false readings, and oximeters can overestimate saturation in people with darker skin. Treat the number alongside how the patient looks.
Questions we get asked
Before you buy
Which is the best oximeter in South Africa for home use?
For home spot checks, choose a fingertip model with a stated accuracy and a display you can read easily. The ADC Advantage 2200 states SpO₂ ±2% and comes with batteries and a lanyard. The Contec CMS-50D is the entry-level option.
What is a normal oxygen saturation?
In a healthy adult at sea level, SpO₂ is usually 95% or above. Your doctor may give you a different target if you have a lung condition. A home oximeter does not replace medical assessment.
Can I use an adult oximeter on a child?
Only if the child's finger fills the sensor. Small fingers give unreliable readings in adult models. The ADC Adimals 2150 fits fingers of 7.6–11.2 mm.
What does the waveform show?
The pleth waveform or bar graph shows the pulse the sensor is detecting. A regular, steady trace means the signal is good. A flat or jumpy trace means the number may be wrong.
