For most medical students, the Littmann Classic III is the safe choice: a dual-sided, tunable stainless steel chestpiece for adult and paediatric patients, with a 5-year warranty. On a tighter budget, the WiZmed Stethoscope and the ADC Adscope 603 do the same ward work for less. If you will wear it through long shifts, look at the lighter Littmann Lightweight II S.E. or ADC Adscope Lite 619.
The short answer
- Medicine: Littmann Classic III if you can, WiZmed Stethoscope or ADC Adscope 603 if you can't.
- Nursing and BP-heavy work: the light Littmann Lightweight II S.E. or ADC Adscope Lite 619.
- Buy dual-head with a tunable or adjustable-frequency diaphragm. Skip single-head home scopes.
- A cardiology stethoscope can wait until your work calls for one.
- We engrave Littmann, ADC and WiZmed stethoscopes for R250, usually the same day.
What a student stethoscope has to do
In your clinical years one stethoscope does three jobs: heart sounds, breath sounds and manual blood pressure. That rules out the single-head scopes sold for home use. Look for four things:
- A dual-head chestpiece: a diaphragm plus a smaller second side for focused listening and small patients.
- A tunable or adjustable-frequency diaphragm. Light pressure brings up low-frequency sounds, firm pressure the high ones, without turning the chestpiece over.
- Comfortable eartips and a headset that seals, because you will wear it for hours and an OSCE examiner will not wait while you fiddle.
- A real warranty and spare parts, because diaphragms and eartips wear out and go missing.

Our verdict
If the budget allows, the Classic III. If it doesn't, the WiZmed Stethoscope or ADC Adscope 603. For long shifts and lots of blood pressures, the Lightweight II S.E. or Lite 619.
Colours go in and out of stock, especially in the ADC range, so check the finish you want is available before you set your heart on it.
Which Littmann stethoscope is best for medical students?
The Classic III is the one most of our medical students buy. Both sides of the chestpiece are tunable, so the smaller paediatric side is a usable second diaphragm rather than an afterthought, which matters on your paediatrics block. The 69 cm next-generation tubing resists skin oils and alcohol. It is the scope most people keep into internship and community service.
Standard stainless steel finishes are the lower end of the Classic III range, for example burgundy. Mirror, rainbow, smoke and champagne finishes, such as navy blue with a mirror finish, cost a little more for the look alone. The acoustics are the same.
The Lightweight II S.E. weighs 118 g and its teardrop chestpiece slips under a blood pressure cuff easily, but it carries a 2-year warranty rather than five. It suits nursing more than medicine. The Cardiology IV is a step up again and rarely needed as a student; if you are weighing it up for later, read Master Cardiology vs Cardiology IV.
Best stethoscope by budget
Under R1,000
R1,000 to R2,000
This is where most students on a budget land. The WiZmed Stethoscope has a CNC-machined stainless steel dual-head chestpiece with a non-chill rim, latex-free single-lumen tubing, a spare diaphragm and spare eartips in the box, and a 5-year warranty handled from our Cape Town office. We made it for the year when a Classic III does not fit the budget; the story is in why we made our own.
The ADC Adscope 603 sits in the same band with a surgical stainless steel chestpiece, two spare pairs of eartips and ADC's lifetime warranty on all parts. The sea glass and rose-gold finishes are popular. For a fair side-by-side of the two brands, see ADC vs Littmann.

Medicine
You will listen for murmurs, added breath sounds and bowel sounds, and take a lot of blood pressures. A dual-head scope with a tunable diaphragm covers all of it. A cardiology-grade scope can wait until you know you need one.
Nursing
Nursing students take a lot of manual blood pressures and wear the scope for whole shifts. The Lightweight II S.E. and the Lite 619 are made for that: light, with chestpieces that sit easily under a cuff.
Physiotherapy
Physiotherapists mostly listen to the chest, before and after treatment, so you want a good diaphragm for breath sounds and a scope comfortable enough to wear through a day of rehab. Any of the dual-head models above works.
Paramedics and emergency care
You need something robust that you can hear with on a noisy scene. The ADC Adscope 603 and the WiZmed Stethoscope both have stainless steel chestpieces and replaceable parts.

Engraving, cases and spares
Stethoscopes all look alike on a ward, and they go missing. We laser-engrave a name on Littmann, ADC and WiZmed stethoscopes for R250, usually on the day you order (on some ADC finishes the engraving goes on the earpieces rather than the chestpiece). Examples are in engrave your stethoscope.

Questions people ask
Which stethoscope is best for medical students?
For most medical students, the Littmann Classic III: tunable diaphragms on both sides, a stainless steel chestpiece and a 5-year warranty. On a tighter budget, the WiZmed Stethoscope or the ADC Adscope 603 are dual-head, stainless steel alternatives that handle the same ward work.
Do medical students need a cardiology stethoscope?
Usually not. A good dual-head stethoscope with a tunable diaphragm covers heart, lung and blood pressure work through your clinical years. Most people only consider a cardiology-grade scope later, if their work calls for it.
Which stethoscope is best for nursing students?
A light one that sits easily under a blood pressure cuff. The Littmann Lightweight II S.E. (118 g, teardrop chestpiece) and the ADC Adscope Lite 619 (105 g) are the usual choices. A Classic III suits nurses heading for ICU, theatre or paediatrics.
Is a cheap single-head stethoscope good enough for students?
It will do for a blood pressure, but a single-head scope is a poor tool for picking up soft murmurs and added breath sounds. For clinical years, choose a dual-head stethoscope with a tunable or adjustable-frequency diaphragm.
Can I get my name engraved on a stethoscope?
Yes. We laser-engrave Littmann, ADC and WiZmed stethoscopes for R250, usually on the day you order, and then dispatch it.
