The UCT MBChB Calculator works out your points across every MBChB course, shows whether you are on track for Distinction or Honours, and lets you test "what if" marks for the modules still to come. It is free, needs no login and is live at mbchb.wizmed.co.za.
The short answer
- Enter your marks and it calculates your points from each course’s weighting.
- What-If mode lets you drag sliders for modules you have not written yet.
- It shows Distinction in the Basic or Clinical Sciences, Honours and First Class Honours eligibility.
- No login: your marks are saved in your own browser.
The problem it solves
UCT medical students juggle dozens of courses, each with its own grading scheme and point value. It is hard to answer a simple question like: if I score 75% in the module I have left, do I lock in Honours? The calculator answers it without Excel hacks or buried PDF tables.
How it works
Four steps
Visit the site
Open mbchb.wizmed.co.za. No login required.
Enter your marks
Type in your actual percentages, or PASS / FAIL where that is how a course is graded.
Switch on What-If mode
For upcoming modules, drag the sliders to simulate results.
Read the output
See your awards, percentage breakdowns and next-step guidance instantly.

What it calculates
Points from your exact marks
It pulls in every MBChB course’s point weighting automatically, calculates the points you have earned (First Class, Upper Second or Lower Second) from your exact marks, and shows your total points earned against the maximum available.
| Class | Mark |
|---|---|
| First Class | 75% and above |
| Upper Second | 70–74.9% |
| Lower Second | 60–69.9% |
What-If mode
Turn on What-If and drag sliders for any remaining courses. Try out hypothetical marks and watch your overall percentage, Distinction eligibility or Honours status update in real time.
Real-time feedback
You see straight away whether you have qualified for Distinction in the Basic or Clinical Sciences. If you are short of the mark, it tells you precisely how many more points you need, for example in Years 4 to 6.
Clear guidance on the rules
A legend panel shows which percentages count as First Class, Upper Second and Lower Second, and a "Show Info" tooltip explains the degree award criteria: Distinction in the Basic or Clinical Sciences, Honours and First Class Honours. The design uses pill-shaped inputs and buttons with a light and dark theme.
Who should use it?
- Current UCT MBChB students tracking their performance.
- Academic advisors and tutors supporting student success.
- Prospective students exploring how degree awards work.
