Satin tubing.

Littmann now makes the Cardiology IV with satin-finish tubing. The chestpiece, the diaphragms and the sound are unchanged. Only the tube is different: a soft, low-sheen coating in place of the usual gloss.

Gloss or satin.

Gloss tubing throws back a sharp reflection. Satin spreads the light out, so the colour reads evenly under a ward light.

What the coating does.

  1. 1Less clingThe coating lowers surface friction, so the tube is less likely to stick to hair, skin or a collar.
  2. 2Easier to keep cleanIt resists stains and debris, and wipes clean between patients.
  3. 3SofterThe tube is more flexible. It drapes around the neck and folds into a pocket more easily.
  4. 4Harder wearingIt stands up to scratches and everyday wear better than standard tubing.

As Littmann describes the finish. The acoustics are the same as the standard tube.

The satin colours.

Every Cardiology IV Littmann makes with satin tubing.

Littmann’s flagship diagnostic stethoscope, in Littmann’s new satin finish. A high-polish rainbow chestpiece against deep navy satin. A statement piece that stays professional.
  • Satin tubing that doesn’t cling to hair or clothing
  • Resists stains and scratches, and wipes clean easily
  • Softer and more flexible, and folds into a pocket
  • The same Cardiology IV acoustics, with a 7-year Littmann warranty
A high-polish rainbow chestpiece against deep navy satin. A statement piece that stays professional. This is the Cardiology IV you know, with the same acoustics and chestpiece, finished in Littmann’s new satin-finish tubing.

Why satin?

Standard Littmann tubing has a smooth, slightly glossy surface. Satin tubing adds a micro-textured coating that changes how the stethoscope feels and wears every day:
  • Doesn’t cling. The micro-textured coating reduces surface friction, so the tube is less likely to stick to hair, skin or clothing.
  • Stays clean-looking. Resists stains and debris, and wipes clean easily between patients.
  • Softer in the hand. A more flexible tube that drapes around the neck and folds into a pocket more easily.
  • Built to last. More resistant to scratches and everyday wear than standard tubing.
Littmann designed satin to give no compromise on acoustic performance. Only the tube finish changes. The chestpiece, diaphragms and sound are identical to the standard model.

Cardiology IV acoustics

  • Dual-lumen tubing: two sound paths in one tube, so the tubes do not rub together and add noise.
  • Tunable diaphragms on the adult and paediatric sides. Light pressure for low-frequency sounds and firm pressure for high-frequency sounds.
  • The paediatric side converts to an open bell with a non-chill rim.
  • Cardiology-grade acoustics for murmurs, extra heart sounds and difficult chests.
  • Soft-sealing eartips for a comfortable fit and good noise seal.

Caring for satin tubing

Wipe the tube with a 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe or mild soap and water, then let it air-dry. Do not soak it in liquid or sterilise it. Keep it away from extreme heat, cold, solvents and oils, as with any Littmann.

Satin or standard?

Satin costs R300 more than the standard Navy Blue Cardiology IV (R4 749). You get a tube that resists cling, stains and scratches and feels softer around the neck. The acoustics are the same. If you will wear it every shift for years, satin is the upgrade we would choose.
